Israel claims to have eliminated Hamas military chief Deif, the architect of the October 7 attack.

In an airstrike that took place on July 13, the Israeli army declared on Thursday that it had "eliminated" Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, the architect of the October 7 attack.

"The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) announces that on July 13th, 2024, IDF fighter jets struck in the area of Khan Yunis, and following an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that Mohammed Deif was eliminated in the strike," according to the military.

Deif is thought to have been the mastermind of the October 7 raid on southern Israel by Hamas, which started the 300-day Gaza war. For decades, he had been at the top of Israel's most wanted list, accused of being directly responsible for the suicide bombing deaths of numerous Israelis.

 Over a 30-year period, Deif, one of Hamas' most prominent individuals, advanced through the organization's ranks, expanding both its tunnel network and its proficiency in creating bombs.

Deif had escaped seven prior Israeli attempts at her life, the most recent one occurring in 2021. Alongside top colleagues, he was thought to have been overseeing military operations in Gaza's tunnels and backstreets in the months following October 7.

The militant leader, known as Mohammed Deif, was born in the Khan Younis Refugee Camp in 1965 under the name Mohammed Masri. He joined Hamas during the first Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, which started in 1987. The camp was established in the wake of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
